A wonderful new element I have added to all of my classes from Outreach classes where many of the kids have minimal to no experience, to classes of highly trained classical dancers. UJJAYI breathing. Ujjayi breathing from the Hindu tradition, basically is inhaling the same amount as one exhales through the nose. I have found that doing it with music is a big help. Especially at the start of class. From Hip Hop to Ballroom, it works.
So, once everyone finds their perfect spot, introduce the concept of Ujjayi then together inhale for 8 counts exhale for 8 counts and do it 8 times. I find it best to count them in, as well as lifting the hands for the inhale , and lowering the hands for the exhale .
It is also good to mention to your students that you are "clearing the slate" for a present, focussed class, with a body complete with oxygen.
Sometimes I do it in Mountain pose ( in ballet 6th position ) or sitting. It is a wonderful way for you and your class to become centered together.
Enjoy the flow:)
